Traveling to Cozumel : FAQ
-
 How
do I make a reservation?
- To book a reservation, just complete our Online Reservation Form
or give us a call at 800-346-9470. Please specify the dates you
would like to travel, the number in your party, the property you
would like to reserve and any special requests you may have. A
deposit is required in order to confirm your reservation.
Reservations require a 50% non-refundable deposit and full payment 30 days
prior to occupancy. In addition, we collect a $150-$200 security deposit and
a 12% IVA tax which is due with the final payment. (The IVA is collected from
the homeowners by the Mexican government on all tourist rental properties.
Please note that the 12% tax must be added to the total rental balance.) The
security deposit is fully refundable, provided no damage is reported, and will
be mailed to you 15 to 30 days after your departure.
- When do Holiday Season Rates apply?
- Rates for the weeks that include Christmas and New Year’s
Day are not published, but we’ll be happy to can be quote
them for you by phone or email.
- What if I need to cancel my reservation?
- Each cancellation will be assessed a $50 processing fee. We
provide full refunds, less the processing fee, only if we can
re-book the
property for the same travel dates and at the same rental rate.
If the property remains vacant, no refund is issued. An alternate
date
can be scheduled based upon availability.
If you think cancellation may be a possibility, we recommend
that you look into cancellation insurance as a protective measure.
It’s
available at all major travel agencies for a nominal fee. Contact
your travel agent for further information.
- How do I get to Cozumel?
- Continental, Mexicana, and American Airlines are the major
air carriers that fly directly to the Cozumel International Airport.
Continental connects via Houston while Mexicana connects via
Miami. We do not handle air transportation.
Airline connections from Cancun to Cozumel can be made via a
15-minute shuttle flight booked through Mexicana Airlines. If
you fly into Cancun and choose not to take the commuter flight,
you can also make your way from the airport to the Cancun bus
terminal and take an air-conditioned bus ride to Playa del Carmen.
From Playa del Carmen, board the air-conditioned water ferry
to Cozumel. It docks at the downtown pier in Cozumel only a few
minutes from the Cozumel Getaways haciendas.
We’ve found that the most reasonable fares are available
through local charter companies. These charters are much cheaper
than the major airline carriers but have more restrictions and
must be booked through a travel agent. If you’re not aware
of any charters flying from your home area, please contact a
local travel agent and ask for “air only” prices.
Special packages and flights are also often advertised in the
travel sections of major newspapers. Look for ads offering “air
only” transportation.
- What
type of documents do I need?
- A current passport is the most desirable identity document.
Otherwise, a certified copy of your birth certificate (not a
photocopy) will do. If you are traveling with children and both
parents are not traveling together, you'll need a signed and
notarized letter from the non-traveling parent authorizing the
other to escort the child into a foreign country.
- How do I get from the Cozumel Airport
to the rental property?
- Our Cozumel Getaways representative will meet you at the airport.
He will be holding a sign bearing your last name.
Since we are not allowed to bring private vehicles onto the airport
grounds, you’ll be taken to the Cozumel Getaways property
via an airport shuttle service. Our representative will direct
you to the shuttle desk, ensure that the purchase of your shuttle
tickets goes smoothly, and make sure the driver knows your destination.
Depending on the value of the peso, shuttle tickets usually cost
around $8.00 USD and payment may be made in U.S. currency.
Our representative will then meet you at the Cozumel Getaways
property office to assist you in getting settled. The office
is located at the Casa Ogletree Villa, 737 Fco. Mujica Sur (7Y11),
between Calle 7 Sur and Calle 11 Sur.
If you need to
contact our local office while you are in Cozumel, the number
is 87-24514.
- How do I get from the ferry to the Cozumel Getaways
property?
- Since ferry arrival times vary, we suggest you take a taxi
once you arrive on the island. Instruct the taxi driver to take
you to the
Cozumel Getaways office. The office is located at the Casa
Ogletree Villa, 737 Fco. Mujica Sur (7Y11). If you need to contact
our local
office while you are in Cozumel, the number is 87-24514.
The
address is 737 Fco. Mujica Sur, Calle 7 Sur and Calle 11 Sur.,
near the Social Security Hospital.
- What’s the weather like in Cozumel?
- The weather is usually warm to hot, with a fair amount of
humidity. The hottest months are July through October, but even
during
this time it’s pretty tolerable, and there generally is
a gentle breeze. The rainiest part of the year is September through
November.
It usually rains for a short time, then clears up. Actually,
the off-season (May-October) can have its advantages in that
there
are fewer tourists.
- Should I use Mexican pesos or American dollars?
- We don't recommend that you exchange money at the airport
or hotels because rates are not usually in your favor. There
are ATM
cash
machines on the island but you must have your PIN number to
activate. You
can exchange dollars for pesos at cambios, or banks, near the
plaza. You can also use dollars, but it may be to your advantage
to use
pesos.
Credit cards are accepted at many stores and restaurants, but
be careful to note the exact type of credit cards accepted before
you order dinner.
Mexican banks will not cash foreign checks, so it’s a good
idea to know your credit card or debit card PIN number in case
you run short on cash and need to use an ATM machine.
- How safe is
Cozumel?
- Cozumel’s people are, as a rule, friendly and courteous.
The island is quite safe, although we recommend that you
not leave your
valuables sitting around on the beach. It is recommended
that you store your valuable in the safes provided in each property.
- Can
I drink the water?
- We provide purified bottled water at the properties and the
maids will see that it is replenished as needed. Restaurants
and hotels
use purified bottled water and ice is made from purified
water, too. If in doubt, ask… or drink bottled beverages.
- How is
the food?
- The food is superb. There is a wide selection of restaurants,
many within easy walking distance of the Cozumel Getaways.
You
will find plenty of seafood, pizza, pasta, wonderful breads,
and delicious fruits and vegetables. Some of the best food can
be found
in the little out-of-the-way restaurants.
- How can I be reached in
the event of an emergency?
- We have on-site management for our accommodations, and we’ll
provide you with the phone number of your representative in Cozumel
before you leave for the island. Any emergency can be directed
there or to our US office at 800-346-9470. Faxes can be received
at both the Houston and the Cozumel offices.
Local calls can be made from the Cozumel Getaways properties,
and of course collect or credit card calls can be made to the
United States. Please check with your long distance carrier for
the most economical way to place a call from Cozumel to your
destination.
